Previewed by the Compact Sedan concept, the 1 Series Sedan features a prominent grille that is flanked by large headlights and round fog lights.  The model also has a short trunk and small rear doors that will provide access to a cramped rear seat.

BMW is keeping details under wraps but the 1-Series Sedan will ride on the front-wheel-drive UKL platform that underpins everything from the Mini Cooper to the 2 Series Active Tourer.  This decision has provoked some controversy but the car's key competitors - the Audi A3 sedan and Mercedes CLA - both ride on front-wheel-drive platforms and have been immensely successful.

Engine options remain unconfirmed but previous reports have suggested the model will be offered with an assortment of three- and four-cylinder engines.  Entry-level models are expected to have a 1.5-liter TwinTurbo Power three-cylinder engine that produces 134 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque, while range-topping variants are expected to come with a 2.0-liter TwinPower Turbo four-cylinder engine that develops 228 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque.

The 1 Series Sedan is slated to be introduced later this year, so look for a debut at an upcoming auto show.
