Volkswagen has developed a new sedan christened “Ameo” specifically for the Indian market and today we get an early look thanks to the attached spy photo.

The model will effectively slot between the Polo and Vento in VW’s lineup for the Indian market and will be manufactured locally at the factory in Chakan. There’s not much to talk about in terms of design as it looks pretty much like a shortened Vento with some minor cosmetic tweaks here and there.

This particular car has a turbodiesel 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine as denoted by the TDI badging on the trunk. It’s borrowed from the Polo where it develops 90 horsepower and 170 pound-feet (230 newton meters) of torque in the regular model and 105 hp and 187 lb-ft (250 Nm) in the Polo GT TDI. In both states of tune, the engine will likely work with a five-speed manual gearbox sending power to the front wheels.

VW India could decide to sell the Ameo also with a naturally-aspirated 1.2-liter three-cylinder gasoline unit rated at 75 hp and 81 lb-ft (110 Nm). There might even be a punchier turbocharged 1.2-liter four-cylinder unit linked exclusively to a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox.

As far as the interior is concerned, it will basically be carried over from the Polo and Vento since it wouldn’t make sense to spend R&D money on new bits and pieces just for this model. Buyers will have to choose between the usual Trendline, Comfortline, and Highline trims, with the latter providing a generous amount of kit. Some of the goodies on offer include rear parking sensors, rearview camera, cooled glove box, rear AC vents, front center armrest, and MirrorLink connectivity.

The VW Ameo sedan will receive its premiere on February 3 at the 2016 Auto Expo and should go on sale shortly thereafter. It will have to face some stiff competition coming from the Honda Amaze, Tata Zest, Hyundai Xcent, Ford Figo Aspire, and the Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire.
