Ford Performance is now offering an optional back seat kit for the 2016 Shelby Mustang GT350R.

The Blue Oval company says many people have expressed their desire to make the GT350R a four-seater (2+2 actually) which is why Ford has decided to listen and offer an optional back seat kit. It costs $999 and is available through Ford Performance Parts for the 2016 model year. The company recommends installing the two rear seats at an authorized dealer or a service center to ensure utmost safety for the rear passengers.

As you would expect, the rear seats have the same Alcantara upholstery and red stitching as the front ones and come with all of the occupant restraint systems found in the GT350. Once installed, the Shelby GT350R becomes what Ford describes as being “the most track-ready, road-going four-seat Mustang ever built.”

Keep in mind the optional rear seats do add some weight on top of the standard car’s 3,650 pounds (1,655 kilograms). As a consequence, this will hamper the car’s performances a little bit, but in the end that won’t really matter when you have 526 horsepower coming out of the 5.2-liter V8 engine.

If you would rather have the more docile GT350, that one comes as standard with the back seats and it also has amenities such as radio, air conditioning, rearview camera, and trunk carpeting. All of these have been eliminated from the R version to shave off weight.
