A new report sheds some light regarding Abarth’s version of the Fiat 124 Spider programmed to come out in 2017.
A couple of days ago we shared a render depicting a possible look for the Abarth 124 Spider and now we bring some technical specifications courtesy of a report published by our colleagues at Piston Heads. They say it will be offered with a four-cylinder 1.4-liter turbo engine developing 160 bhp (119 kW) and 190 bhp (142 kW), but there’s also a plan for a range-topping edition with the engine generating more than 200 bhp (149 kW).
It will apparently be sold with an optional matte black hood as a throwback to the Abarth-tuned 124 Stradale homologation car of the 70s and word on the street suggests there are plans for a hardtop as well. A more aggressive body, stiffer suspension, enlarged brakes, and other mechanical upgrades are also in the works for Abarth’s version of the Fiat 124 Spider which itself is based on the latest Mazda MX-5.
We saved the best for last as apparently FCA has plans to race the Abarth 124 Spider in WRC starting 2017. Details are scarce right now, but an undisclosed source within Abarth says the vehicle will take part in a new sports car category aimed to bring back some of the WRC’s lost reputation.
