Porsche fans will probably be happy to hear the next generation 911 GT3 will receive a manual gearbox.
Currently, the sports model is offered to customers only with a 7-speed automatic dual-clutch PDK transmission but that is about to change with the next generation model that will reportedly be introduced with a standard manual gearbox or an optional automatic providing faster gear changes.
Speaking to Car and Driver, Andreas Preuninger, head of Porsche’s GT program, commented the GT3 “is full of systems that make sense on the track, but for the purist, there may be something lost”. He also added “it is our long-term goal to have the customer decide between the two approaches”.
As for the manual transmission of the next-gen 911 GT3, it will likely be a classic 6-speed gearbox and not the 7-speed manual of the base 911 Carrera models.
Before the next 911 GT3, Porsche will launch the 911 R “pure” version, using the 6-cylinder 3.8-liter normally aspirated engine of the 911 GT3 that has 475 PS (349 kW) and 438 Nm (324 lb-ft). The unit will be mated to a manual transmission. The model is expected to debut next year with production limited to 600 units, all of them reportedly being already sold out.
