MINI has dropped the top on the 2016 Cooper Convertible.

Currently on display at the Tokyo Motor Show, the redesigned model follows in the footsteps of the Cooper Hatchback but eschews the fixed roof for a retractable soft top that can be opened or closed in 18 seconds at speeds up to 30 km/h (18 mph).  The model also has a more accommodating cabin and a larger trunk that holds up to 215 liters (7.6 cubic feet) of luggage.

At launch, the convertible will be available with three different engines including:

  • A 1.5-liter TwinPower Turbo three-cylinder with 136 PS (100 kW) and 220 Nm (162 lb-ft) of torque - 230 Nm (169 lb-ft) with overboost
  • A 2.0-liter TwinPower Turbo four-cylinder with 192 PS (141 kW) and 280 Nm (206 lb-ft) of torque - 300 Nm (221 lb-ft) with overboost
  • A 1.5-liter TwinPower Turbo three-cylinder diesel with 116 PS (85 kW) and 270 Nm (199 lb-ft) of torque - 300 Nm (221 lb-ft) with overboost

The engines can be paired to either a six-speed manual or an optional automatic six-speed manual transmission.
