Volkswagen’s second generation Phaeton full-size sedan has returned in a couple of speculative renders based on the C Coupe GTE concept.

Despite the ongoing dieselgate scandal, Volkswagen has reconfirmed the second generation Phaeton is still on the agenda and it will have an “emotional design” which could take cues from the C Coupe GTE concept shown earlier this year in China at Auto Shanghai. The attached digital illustrations are based on the concept and show a potential look for VW’s crown jewel which will probably look more or less like an upscale elongated Passat.

Volkswagen is aiming very high with the new Phaeton as last year we heard a rumor indicating they want to make it more comfortable than a Mercedes-Benz S-Class. In addition, a semi-autonomous driving system is expected to be offered as optional equipment and it will apparently work at speeds of up to 37 mph (60 km/h).

An exact launch date has not been disclosed so far, but at least we know it will be available with the new 6.0-liter twin-turbo W12 engine that made its debut in the Bentley Bentayga where it develops 608 PS (447 kW) and 900 Nm (663 lb-ft) of torque. In addition, there’s going to be a fully electric version capable of providing a “long-distance” range but this one is unlikely to be offered from day one.
