SsangYong is introducing an updated Korando featuring a more powerful turbodiesel engine and an optional 6-speed automatic transmission.

The compact crossover from South Korea is being refreshed thanks to a newly developed Euro 6-compliant 2.2-liter four-cylinder turbodiesel engine rated at 178 PS (131 kW) which makes it 19.4% more powerful than the Euro 5 2.0-liter unit it replaces. Torque is also up by 11% to 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) and it's available in a broad 1,400 to 2,800 rpm range.

Aside from being stronger, this new e-XDi220 diesel engine is also less harmful to the environment as CO2 emissions have been reduced from 147 g/km to 139 g/km for the 2WD manual model while fuel efficiency has increased from the previous 47.1 mpg UK (39.2 mpg US or 6 liters / 100 km) to 53.3 mpg UK (44.3 mpg US or 5.3 liters / 100 km) in the combined cycle.

It comes as standard with a six-speed manual gearbox, but at an additional cost SsangYong is offering the 2016 Korando with an optional new Aisin 6-speed automatic transmission on the 4x4 model which they say provides smooth gear changes and a better driving performance.

The 2016 Korando has other novelties such as clear glass direction indicators, fresh 16- to 18-inch alloy wheel designs and a new piano black radiator grille with more chrome detailing on the ELX trim. On the inside, the SE now has an RDS sound system with support for MP3, Bluetooth, iPod/iPhone while the mid-range EX variant comes with a 7-inch touchscreen high-resolution display working together with a rearview camera and if you go for the flagship ELX you also get TomTom navigation. Regardless of trim, all Korandos have USB, AUX and HDMI ports.

Pricing kicks off from £15,995 for the entry-level Korando 2.2 SE in 2WD guise and goes all the way up to £22,495 for the top-of-the-range Korando 2.2 ELX 4x4 automatic.
