Volkswagen CEO Prof. Dr. Martin Winterkorn has used the Frankfurt Motor Show to announce plans to launch at least 20 electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids by 2020.

Volkswagen CEO Prof. Dr. Martin Winterkorn has used the Frankfurt Motor Show to announce plans to launch at least 20 electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids by 2020.

The executive was tight-lipped on specifics but confirmed the eco-friendly models will include everything from "compact cars to the next Phaeton and Audi A8."

Winterkorn went on to say that "By 2020 we will have transformed all of our new cars into smartphones on wheels."  He says this leap in technology will pave the way for "one of the most fascinating technologies of our time" which is automated driving.

Volkswagen declined to release a timetable for autonomous vehicles but Winterkorn said "Audi and Volkswagen are making sure our customers benefit from this technology as quickly as possible: on highways, in stop-and-go traffic, when searching for a parkng space." 

Last but not least, Winterkorn confirmed gesture control will becoming to future models shortly.
