Land Rover's Special Vehicle Operations division has introduced its very first armored vehicle: the Range Rover Sentinel.

It's based on the top-spec standard wheelbase Autobiography model and has received VR8 level certification which means that it can withstand 7.62mm high-velocity, armor piercing incendiary bullets. It also boasts exceptional lateral protection against up to 15 kg TNT blasts and also provides defense against DM51 grenade explosions from beneath the floor as well as from above the roof.

This is all possible thanks to a bespoke six-piece armored passenger cell manufactured from "super-high-strength steel" while the standard glass for the windows has been replaced by multi-laminated armor privacy glass which grants bullet protection while maintaining great clarity for the driver and passengers.

SVO has also worked on the Dynamic Stability Control and Ride Stability Control systems and they mention the Sentinel has a maximum payload capacity of 650 kg. Needless to say, the suspension also had to be reworked now that the vehicle is significantly heavier due to the added hardware which also includes an auxiliary back-up battery, split charging system, self-sealing fuel tank and an anti-tamper exhaust. It now rides on 20-inch alloys with heavy-duty run-flat tires and has also received a fire suppression system.

The engine of choice was the supercharged V6 3.0-liter pushing out 340 PS channeled to the wheels through a revised 8-speed ZF automatic transmission while the stopping power is provided by 380 mm front and 365 mm rear ventilated disc brakes matched with high-density pads.

In case the main doors are blocked, there's an emergency escape system located behind the rear seats which allows the driver and the passenger to exit the vehicle in an emergency situation.

Available for order later this month, the Range Rover Sentinel is fully homologated in the European Union, South America, Africa and the Middle East. Land Rover mentions the armored vehicle has a guide price of less than €400,000 and comes with a 3-year / 50,000-mile warranty.
