A new report indicates Fiat is just about ready to give the Abarth-prepared 500X the stamp of approval.

At the end of May we posted a video showing a possible higher performance 500X and it seems a spicier version of the baby crossover is indeed on the agenda and it's actually a high priority for Fiat's Abarth performance arm. It hasn't been green-lighted for production just yet, but sources close to the Italian marque are indicating it will join an expanded Abarth lineup set to include a beefier Fiat 124 Spider and a spicy facelifted 500.

If approved, the 500X by Abarth will like employ a four-cylinder 1.75-liter engine sourced from the Alfa Romeo 4C but likely detuned to somewhere in the region of 200 bhp (149 kW). The stronger heart will be matched with a more aggressive body with wider fenders, along with larger wheels, dual exhaust setup and enlarged brakes.

It will probably be a while until the Abarth-prepared 500X will see the light of production day as the hotter 124 Spider version will likely be the first to come out.
