Kia has announced a proper sportscar will be launched before the end of this decade.

They have been playing the teasing game for quite some time as the GT rear-wheel drive concept was introduced way back in September 2011 at the Frankfurt Motor Show. Since then, many rumors emerged about the possibility of seeing a production version and apparently a revised concept closer to the series car will be shown either at the 2015 Los Angeles Auto Show or the 2016 NAIAS.

Kia UK boss Paul Philpott says a fully-fledged sportscar will be out before 2020 and will be influenced not only by the GT concept, but also by the more recent GT4 Stinger concept pictured above. The plan is to sell it all over the world at an "affordable" price tag and rather than being based on an existing model, the sportscar will be a standalone model that won't source components from other Kias.

The closest thing they have has right now to a sportscar is the cee'd GT & pro cee'd GT which use a 1.6-liter turbocharged gasoline engine with 204 PS and 265 Nm. The duo was updated recently with a new turbo that has increased air pressure and this has enabled the models to run the 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) in 7.6 seconds which is far from being sportscar material.

In related news, Philpott announced a Nissan Juke-rivaling B-segment crossover is due within the next two years with cues from the 2013 Niro concept and there’s also going to be a replacement for the Picanto city car scheduled for a 2017 launch.
