Opel has announced the 2016 Astra is one of the most aerodynamic models in its class thanks to an impressive drag coefficient of 0.285.

In order to achieve this figure, engineers and designers decided to let the roof "flow out gently" to the rear end to minimize drag.  The model was also equipped with a rear spoiler and a unique C-pillar that has small edges which were designed to split the airflow and reduce drag. The 2016 Astra is also smaller and lower than its predecessor which helps to improve efficiency.

Interestingly, the car eschews full underbody panels for "airflow-optimized underbody structures."  Opel says this reduces weight and production costs while also improving the car's aerodynamics.

While the 0.285 drag coefficient is certainly impressive, Opel confirmed an "even more aerodynamic and frugal ecoFlex version is planned for the future."
