Lotus has announced the Elise will be making a return in United States after the end of this decade.

At the end of last month we found out Lotus has plans to launch an updated Elise sometime in 2017, but now we are hearing it won’t make the journey stateside as Lotus plans on bringing the car to U.S. after 2020 when the next generation will be introduced.

We remind you the US-spec Elise was originally imported back in 2004 but Lotus had to withdraw the model in 2011 once the safety regulation exemptions expired. Although the bigger Evora will be revised with smart airbags to regain eligibility for the U.S. market, that won't happen with the Elise as company's CEO Jean-Marc Gales said implementing the same array of updates would add 100 kg (220 lbs) and obviously it would hamper performance.

Instead, Lotus will bring the next-gen Elise which will be fully compliant with the U.S. regulations but as previously mentioned it will take a while.
