A new report states Mercedes-AMG will launch a GT4 model in 2018 to compete head to head with the second generation Porsche Panamera.

Rather than looking like a four-door, stretched version of the AMG GT, this new model will have a significantly different design with an "amazingly low roofline" and bespoke doors, quarter panels and bumpers. It's also getting unique lighting clusters and a practical tailgate while the underpinnings are set to be borrowed from the next-gen CLS so it will be very much related to next year's E-Class.

The report goes on to specify Mercedes-AMG will offer three trim packages known as AMG, AMG S and AMG Sport while the engine lineup will include an inline-six 2.9-liter turbodiesel with around 300 bhp (223 kW) and 400 bhp (298 kW), an electrified six-cylinder turbo with 455 bhp (339 kW) and a couple of V8s pushing out 557 bhp (415 kW) and 585 bhp (436 kW).

If all goes according to plan, the Mercedes-AMG GT will hit dealerships late 2018 / early 2019.
