BMW bosses have reportedly green lighted the production of the X2 and the first test prototypes of the vehicle will hit the streets in the coming weeks.

As reported before, the model will be positioned between the current X1 and X3 and will hit the market in 2017. The first road-going prototypes of the machine are scheduled to hit the streets in the weeks to come, Autocar reports. “We’re finalising the first prototypes now,” the magazine's sources said. “They should be in action by the end of the month.”

As expected, the X2 will be based on the X1 and will follow the example of the X4 and X6 in terms of design. It will feature five doors and room for five passengers.

Engine lineup will include familiar turbo petrol and diesel engines, also offered in the new X1. Transmission options will include a 6-speed manual gearbox and 8-speed automatic.
