Continuing its painstakingly slow march to production, the open-top MINI has been caught on camera once again and this time it was a hotter S version being driven with the top down as it was a beautiful sunny summer day. The swirly black & yellow camouflage is redundant as we all know how the car will look like since the body will be virtually carried over from its fixed metal-roofed sibling.

Underneath the hood of this near-production prototype resides a punch 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbocharged gasoline engine with 189 bhp (141 kW) and 206 lb-ft (280 Nm). It will be a tad slower than the regular Cooper S due to a slightly higher curb weight so expect the 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) to take a few ticks of a second more than the 6.8s necessary for the manual hatch and 6.7s for the automatic version. Top speed will also decrease a little bit from the hot hatchback's 235 km/h (233 km/h automatic).

Expect MINI to bring the Cooper Cabrio lineup to this year's Frankfurt Motor Show programmed for mid-September.
