Mitsubishi Motors North America executive vice president Don Swearingen has confirmed the company has begun working on the next-generation Lancer.

Speaking to Wards Auto, Swearingen said Mitsubishi is still seeking a partner to help develop the vehicle but they can't wait any longer so they're also doing some development work on their own.  As he explained, "We’re running parallel because we cannot wait any longer to see if a partnership will work out. If it falls through then we’re another year behind.”

The executive went on to say they are currently in talks with another automaker.  Swearingen declined to elaborate but previous reports have suggested it might be Nissan.

Unfortunately, an all-new Lancer is still a ways off as Swearingen said that even if a deal was completed by the end of the year the model would still be at least 18 months to two years away.
