A fully camouflaged prototype of the 2016 Mercedes-Benz E-Class was caught on camera with the front passenger door opened.

It will be interesting to see whether the new E-Class W213 will have an interior more related to the C-Class or to the S-Class, but taking into consideration it's bound to use the MRA platform as the C, most likely the cabin will have more in common with the compact model. However, except a more premium fit and finish to justify the added price for Daimler's upcoming mid-size sedan set to get a little bit bigger thanks to a stretched wheelbase providing a roomier cabin, especially for rear passengers.

Aside from mentioning the possibility of implementing semi-autonomous driving tech , Mercedes-Benz hasn't really said anything about the new E-Class but it is believed a 150 kg (330 lbs) diet will be possible as a result of the new architecture. The car's styling will obviously be a blend between the C and S, but hopefully the designers will make the new E a bit more distinctive.

Latest gossip indicates a January 2016 reveal at the North American International Auto Show, but only for the sedan. The wagon should follow six months later or so while a long wheelbase sedan, cabrio and a coupe will eventually join the range, not necessarily in this order. Obviously, the CLS range will also be overhauled probably in 2017 and could be renamed to CLE based on Mercedes-Benz's latest naming structure .
