KGO-TV is reporting thieves in San Francisco are now focusing their "efforts" on Toyota Prius batteries.

Prius owner John Nashed told KGO-TV he found the rear windows broken when he returned to his parked car. The thieves stole the vehicle's nickel-metal hydride battery pack which weighs around 150 lbs (68 kg). He had no other way but to tow the car to a local garage for repairs where an insurance adjuster told him he is working on another three similar cases.

A representative of another local workshop says the thieves are certainly professionals because only someone with proper training would detach the battery without getting hurt after cutting several high voltage harnesses.

The victim found a number of ads on Craiglist for battery packs sourced from Toyota Prius cars and these are priced between $900 and $1,000. San Francisco police is now aware of the growing problem and will focus their efforts to catch the perpetrators.
