British media is reporting Opel has decided to resurrect the "GSi" moniker for a potent version of the next generation Astra.
Auto Express managed to acquire a spy shot of an interesting 2016 Astra prototype featuring enlarged alloy wheels and a dual exhaust system which indicates a spicy version of the German compact hatchback is in the works. They believe Opel will bring back the "GSi" name for a higher performance Astra which will sit below the fully-fledged OPC edition that has been confirmed to have more than 280 bhp (209 kW).
The Astra GSi will reportedly develop approximately 250 bhp (186 kW) and will rival other warm hatches such as the Ford Focus ST and Volkswagen Golf GTI. The output will likely be provided by four-cylinder, 2.0-liter turbocharged gasoline engine which could also find its way underneath the hood of a wagon Astra GSi.
The regular next-gen Opel Astra will be unveiled in September at the Frankfurt Motor Show which means this rumored GSi version won't be out sooner than 2016 while the OPC model has already been confirmed for a 2017 market launch.
