Nissan has announced the 2016 Maxima has gone into production at the company's plant in Smyrna, Tennessee.

Unveiled earlier this month at the New York Auto Show, the 2016 Maxima features a bold design that has provoked love or hate it reactions.

While the exterior styling hasn't escaped the wrath of critics, the cabin has been significantly improved as it features quality materials and a pleasing design. Notable highlights include a flat-bottomed steering wheel, Alcantara accents, a new infotainment system and a 7.0-inch Advanced Drive Assist Display in the instrument cluster.  Customers can also order a variety of options including heated / cooled front seats, a Bose audio system and premium Ascot leather seats with diamond-quilted inserts.

A 3.5-liter V6 engine resides under the hood and produces 300 bhp (223 kW) and 261 lb-ft (353 Nm) of torque. It is connected to a new Xtronic transmission which should enable the model to return 22 mpg city / 30 mpg highway.

The 2016 Nissan Maxima will go on sale this summer and U.S. pricing starts at $32,410 (excluding an $825 destination and handling fee).
