Fiat Chrysler Automobiles CEO Sergio Marchionne is reportedly eyeing a mega merger or deal before his retirement in 2019.
According to sources who spoke to Reuters, Marchionne wants to finalize a deal which another automaker which would help to improve Fiat's position in Asia as well as cement his legacy as an automotive tycoon.
Sources say Marchionne is primarily interested in General Motors due to their strong position in Asia and the United States as well as intention to make Opel profitable. However, GM doesn't seem to be interested as a spokesperson told the publication they are focused on executing their own strategy.
This seems to be par for the course as a banking insider told Reuters "Marchionne has clearly planted the 'for sale' banner" as "he's been sending out feelers everywhere in an attempt to create optionalities, but so far no one is biting."
