German media has issued a report about BMW's plans to introduce an "Urban Cross" model slotted below the X1.

This is the third time we are hearing rumors about a sub-X1 model but now the vehicle is expected to get the "Urban Cross" moniker unlike the previous reports which indicated a "1-Series Sport Cross”"designation. Auto Motor und Sport says it will be more than just a downsized X1 as the petite crossover will get a different design compared to the X-badged models.

The coupe-shaped crossover will reportedly be four meters long and should provide a trunk capacity of about 330 liters, with power being provided a range of three- and four-cylinder engines. AMS says it will ride on the same front-wheel drive platform as the MINI and could later on spawn a plug-in hybrid version while a fully electric derivative is not being considered.

Rivaling next year's Audi Q1, the BMW Urban Cross (name not final) should come out in 2017 with a starting price of approximately €25,000 in Germany.
