Mercedes has announced plans to offer a new Metris van in the United States.

Mercedes has announced plans to offer a new Metris van in the United States.

Essentially a renamed version of the Vito, the Metris will go on sale in September and feature a turbocharged 1.9-liter four-cylinder petrol engine that develops 211 PS (155 kW) and 350 Nm (258 lb-ft) of torque.

Mercedes was coy on additional specifications but confirmed the panel van will come with driver and front passenger airbags as well as  a seatbelt warning system. The Metris Tourer (passenger van), on the other hand, will offer up to eight air bags. Both models will also feature Attention Assist, Crosswind Assist and a tire pressure monitoring system.

In related news, Mercedes announced the next-generation Sprinter will be built at a new plant in Charleston, South Carolina. Mercedes says the move will allow them to avoid "import duties and a complex disassembly process of Sprinters made in Germany for sale in the U.S."
