A BMW M representative has told CarAdvice an electrified M model is "still a few years down the road."

In an interview held during the BMW X6 M international launch, M division's head of product management Carsten Pries said it will take a while until there will be an electrified M model because currently sales of electric cars are small so developing such a model isn't a viable business case. He went on to specify that people buy EVs nowadays only to stand out from the crowd and it will take some time until electric vehicles are going to be relevant for the majority of car buyers.

He described the LaFerrari, P1 and 918 Spyder electrified supercars as being exciting products but the hefty price tag makes them unattainable for most buyers and that's something that BMW M doesn't want to do right now. He ruled out the possibility of introducing an i8 M model because he believes this would dilute the profile of i-badged models.
