Mercedes-Benz has announced plans to transfer R-Class production from their plant in Tuscaloosa, Alabama to AM General’s Commercial Assembly Plant in Mishawaka, Indiana.

While we never envisioned the R-Class would be built by the folks who brought us the HMMWV, Mercedes says the move is a result of increasing demand for crossovers which are built in Tuscaloosa.

The companies were coy on specifics but confirmed they signed a "multi-year agreement" and the first R-Class models are slated to roll out of AM General's plant this summer.

In a statement, AM General CEO Charlie Hall said “AM General is pleased to have been selected by Mercedes-Benz to build this vehicle at our world-class commercial vehicle facility in Mishawaka. We look forward to a long term relationship with Mercedes and expanding our services to the U.S. and global auto industry."
