PSA Peugeot Citroën CEO Carlos Tavares has revealed the company's upcoming performance models will adopt plug-in hybrid technology.

As Tavares explained to Auto Express, “Currently the only technology that allows you to go to town in pure electric mode – but at the same time enjoy good acceleration, low CO2 and high autonomy – is the plug-in. This is the direction we are taking."

The executive declined to go into specifics but hinted the company is primarily focused on creating performance variants of their smaller models. However, he wouldn't rule out larger performance models but noted the market tends to favor smaller entries.

Tavares also hinted Peugeot Sport will have a greater role in the development of high-performance, road-going models. This helped the RCZ R to become a success, so the company will start leveraging the strengths of Peugeot Sport "more often."
