The BMW i8 has been named car of the year by Top Gear magazine.

According to magazine's editor-in-chief, Charlie Turner, "The BMW is a milestone in the annals of automotive history and a glorious statement for an exciting and positive future." He added, "It’s the kind of car we should celebrate, a beautiful vision of the future, delivered now."

As a refresher, the i8 has a plug-in hybrid powertrain that consists of a 1.5-liter TwinPower Turbo three-cylinder engine, an electric motor and a lithium-ion battery. This enables the model to have a combined maximum output of 362 PS (266 kW) which allows it to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 4.4 seconds before hitting a limited top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph). More importantly, the i8 averages 2.1 L/100 km (134.5 mpg UK / 112 mpg US) and can travel up to 37 km (23 miles) on electricity alone.
