General Motors has made the necessary legal actions to trademark the "Velite" name with the United States Patent & Trademark Office.

In the last few months we heard many reports about the possibility of rebadging the Opel Cascada as a Buick for the U.S. market and now GM's move to register the Velite moniker fuels these rumors. It should be mentioned General Motors initially applied for this trademark in 2011 but the application was not granted. On November 19 they did it again with the application number 86458313 in the goods and services category for "motor land vehicles, namely, automobiles, sport utility vehicles, trucks, vans, engines therefor and structural parts thereof."

General Motors did use the "Velite" nameplate before as back in 2004 at the New York International Auto Show they exhibited a Buick Velite roadster concept which never made it as a production car. Now, the latest gossip indicates Buick will sell a rebadged Opel Cascada for the 2016 model year and chances are it will be commercialized with the Velite name. It is believed the car was already shown to dealers back in August without any changes compared to its European sibling except.
