After a series of teasers, Skoda has released the first official images with the Fabia R5 set to be showcased starting Saturday in Essen.

Acting like a replacement for the Fabia S2000, the new R5 is based on the third generation Fabia supermini but with the typical motorsport-spec enhancements such as a wider and more aerodynamic body, roof scoop, rear wing, race wheels, enlarged brakes and a stiffer suspension setup. It has also gained a centrally-positioned exhaust, Michelin tires and tiny side mirrors.

To comply with FIA regulations, the Skoda Fabia R5 will be powered by a four-cylinder, 1.6-liter turbocharged gasoline engine mated to five-speed sequential gearbox all wrapped around in a body weighing at least 1,230 kg (2,711 lbs). It will also benefit from MacPherson struts and a stripped-down interior to shave off excess weight.

Skoda says customer racing teams have already shown their interest in the Fabia R5 which will compete starting next year in the WRC 2 series.
