Japanese financial daily Nikkei has announced Toyota has sold some of its shares in Tesla Motors.

Earlier this week we found out Daimler sold its entire four percent stake in Tesla Motors in a transaction worth $780 million and now Toyota has sold some of its stake in the American electric vehicle manufacturer. It was May 2010 when Toyota invested $50 million in Tesla for a 2.5 percent stake, but details about the current stake are not available at this point.

We remind you that in May, Toyota disclosed plans to axe the Tesla-powered RAV4 EV without any plans to renewal the contract between the two parties which expires at the end of 2014. The $49,800 model went on sale in 2012 but it turned out to be a failure as only 2,000 units have been sold so far. Tesla Motors CEO Elon Musk did reveal the possibility of signing a new deal with Toyota in the next 2-3 years.

It should be mentioned that aside from Daimler and Toyota, the other major corporate investor in Tesla Motors is Panasonic.
