Volkswagen has released additional information and photos about the all-new eight generation Passat.
Already available for order in Germany, the “best Passat ever”, as described by the manufacturer, is up to 85 kg (188 lbs) lighter than the previous model, thanks to its “innovative lightweight design”. The car is available with 10 direct injection petrol and diesel turbocharged engines that cover a power range from 120 HP (88 kW) to 280 HP (206 kW). The engines' fuel consumption levels, and therefore their CO2 emissions as well, have been reduced by as much as 20 percent. All versions are equipped with a stop-start system and a regenerative braking mode.
The engine range includes:
- 1.4 TSI with 125 HP (92 kW) and 150 HP (110 kW)
- 1.8 TSI with 180 HP (132 kW)
- 2.0 TSI with 220 HP (162 kW) and 280 HP (206 kW)
- 1.6 TDI with 120 HP (88 kW)
- 2.0 TDI with 150 HP (110 kW), 190 HP (140 kW) and 240 HP (176 kW)
- 1.4 TSI plug-in hybrid with 211 HP (155 kW)
As in the previous model, Volkswagen will be offering the new Passat in three equipment lines: Trendline, Comfortline and Highline. The base variant is packed with 16-inch wheels and LED rear lights, while interior features include a front center armrest with storage compartment, height adjustment for the front seats, keyless engine start and stop, automatic post-collision braking, a tyre pressure indicator and more. The Comfortline adds front assist including City Emergency Braking, while the range-topping version comes with Alcantara leather trim and LED headlights.
The European launch of the model is scheduled for November this year. Further international markets will follow in 2015. In Germany the model starts at 25,875 EUR ($33,000) for the saloon and 25,950 EUR ($33,123) for the estate.
