Ferrari is recalling 3,082 units of the 458 Italia and Spider in United States due to an interior trunk latch defect.
There is a problem with the car's front-mounted trunk as the interior release handle will only let loose of the trunk's latches, without actually fully opening the trunk. While this method eliminates the risks of suffocation and gives the entrapped person the possibility to call for help, it still doesn't comply with the federal safety mandates.
The U.S. regulations specify that if someone gets stuck inside the trunk of a car, he or she should be able to open it from the inside, something that can't be done in the US-spec 458 Italia & Spider units affected by the recall. CNN mentions the 458 Speciale is not the subject of this recall and that owners of the affected cars will be notified by Ferrari to bring them to a dealer for a free of charge fix.
