Mazda's General Manager of Global Sales and Marketing hinted a halo sports car could be in the works to celebrate the brand's 100th anniversary.
Mazda is ready to put the RX moniker back on the map as an RX-9 is likely planned for 2020 when the company will celebrate its centenary. But before that, expect a new rotary-powered RX-7 to come out in 2017 as a celebration of the Mazda Cosmo's 50th anniversary, the firm's first car to get a rotary engine.
Even though Mazda's General Manager of Global Sales and Marketing Yasuhiro Aoyama didn't confirm the existence of the RX-7 and RX-9, he did say "this is a very fantastic idea, 2017, [for] a new rotary." Moreover, he added that the all-new MX-5's rear-wheel drive scalable platform could form the basis of new sports cars which will all be designed with a focus on lightweight construction not only to improve the car's performances but also to cut CO2 emissions.
