A mule for the 2016 Audi A8 has been spied undergoing testing on the Nürburgring.

While the prototype doesn't reveal much about the upcoming model, previous reports have suggested the car will have a "more progressive" design with a coupe-like greenhouse and a "nicely tapered rear end."

Audi is also expected to improve the cars dynamics by adding a more responsive air suspension, a torque vectoring system an upgraded Audi Drive Select system. There have also been rumors about a lightweight platform that uses aluminum, high-strength steel and composite materials.

Engine options remain unconfirmed but previous reports have suggested there will be a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 with 460 bhp (343 kW) and a 6.3-liter W12 with 565 bhp (421 kW). There could also be three different diesels with outputs ranging from 272 bhp (203 kW) to 500 bhp (372 kW). All the aforementioned engines will reportedly be connected to an eight-speed automatic transmission and a lightweight quattro all-wheel drive system.
