According to the latest reports, BMW isn't planning a fully-fledged X4 M but they are cooking up the next best thing, a sportier variant rumored to wear the "X4 M40i" moniker. At its heart could end up being an inline-six 3.0-liter turbocharged gasoline engine which will also allegedly power the M2 where it will deliver 370 - 380 PS (272 - 279 kW).

While the current range-topping 306 PS X4 35i has two tailpipes on the left side, the dark blue prototype seen here has one tailpipe on each side, just like the white car our spies photographed a couple of days ago. We notice camouflage on the front & rear bumpers and on the side skirts which probably hides a more aggressive design worthy of an M Performance model.

An official launch should occur next year, possibly in September at the Frankfurt Motor Show.
