Chevrolet has released the first teaser image of the 2016 Volt, ahead of its debut at the 2015 North American International Auto Show.

The company didn't have much to say about the car but the image reveals it will have a more stylish tailgate with an integrated rear spoiler. Previous spy photos have also shown the model will feature curvaceous bodywork, a steeply raked windscreen and an upward sweeping beltline.

Specifications remain a mystery but former GM CEO Dan Akerson said the model will have a "significantly" improved electric-only range that could be as high as 50-60 miles (80-96 km). Previous reports have also indicated there could be a new entry-level variant that costs about $30,000.and uses a smaller battery.
