General Motors has announced several of their 2015 full-size trucks and SUVs will come equipped with a new eight-speed automatic transmission.

The eight-speed gearbox will become standard equipment on 2015 Chevrolet Silverado, GMC Sierra and GMC Yukon Denali / Yukon XL Denali models equipped with the 6.2-liter EcoTec3 V8 engine that develops 420 bhp (313 kW) and 460 lb-ft (623 Nm) of torque.  GM says the new eight-speed transmission is roughly the same size and weight as the previous six-speed gearbox but has a "numerically higher first gear ratio to help drivers start off more confidently with a heavy load or when trailering."  The company also says the transmission has numerically lower rear axle ratios which will reduce engine rpm on the highway.

Detailed specifications will be announced later this year but we can expect to see a slight uptick in performance and fuel efficiency.
