Crossover and SUV sales have finally surpassed sedan sales in the United States.

According to data compiled by IHS Automotive, crossovers and SUVs now account for 36.5 percent of the U.S. light-vehicle market while sedans are close behind at 35.4 percent. The report only factors in retail registrations through May of 2014 but trend has been clear for quite some time.

While a lot of models helped to push the crossover and SUV segment to the top, the report credits newer entries such as the Jeep Cherokee, Nissan Rogue and Chevrolet Tahoe / GMC Yukon for driving sales. The trend will likely continue as a variety of automakers have already announced plans to offer smaller and more affordable crossovers in the future.
