Audi, BMW and Mercedes have big plans for plug-in hybrids but it appears the four-ringed brand has ruled out an R8 plug-in hybrid.

Speaking to Car Advice, Audi product manager Marie Suzanne Ernst said the company will focus exclusively on petrol and electric powered variants. Speaking of the latter, she said "it’s not a make of series production, but if a customer wants to have it, he can order it." This effectively means the R8 e-tron will be built to order which is probably a smart move considering the Mercedes SLS AMG Electric Drive wasn't exactly a hit.

While Audi doesn't appear to have plans for an R8 plug-in hybrid, Ernst hinted they will offer a variety of plug-in hybrid models in the future. She declined to name names but said "We could imagine some more models on the MLB platform, so, the big cars."
