Russian automaker AvtoVAZ has prepared a minor makeover for the Lada Niva basic off-roader.

The 37-year-old budget 4x4 has received a slightly different front fascia with an updated radiator grille featuring three slats, along with body-colored plastic bumpers and a curved rear wiper. Fresh 17-inch wheels get hubcaps while on the inside there's more sound-deadening material, power windows and air conditioning.

Motivation for the Lada Niva Urban is provided by a 4-cylinder, 1.7-liter engine generating 81 bhp (60 kW) at 5,000 rpm sent to both axles through a 5-speed manual gearbox featuring a creeper gear and three differentials (front, center, rear). The 1,210 kg off-roader sprints to 62 mph (100 km/h) in an agonizing 22 seconds before topping out at 85 mph (137 km/h).

Full details about the Urban version will be disclosed towards the end of August when the vehicle will be exhibited at the Moscow Motor Show in Russia. An all-new model is expected sometime in 2016.
