British media is reporting Renault is planning a production version of the Kwid concept set for a 2016 release.

Renault apparently believes there is room in its lineup for a smaller crossover positioned below the Captur as they are plotting a new model derived from the Kwid concept which was 3.6 meters long. The production model will grow to around 4 meters, but it will still be around 120mm shorter than the Clio-based crossover.

It is believed Renault will stick to the Kwid nameplate while the design will be considerably toned down compared to the quirky-looking concept. The model might adopt a three-door configuration for what will be a rounded body shape featuring plastic cladding. It will feature an increased ride height and should come with underbody protection to provide a rugged appearance.

Under the hood it will probably receive very small and efficient engines, including a Twingo-sourced 3-cylinder TCe turbocharged motor with 90 PS (66 kW) & 135 Nm (100 lb-ft) and a naturally-aspirated version of the same engine called SCe with 70 PS (51 kW) & 91 Nm (67 lb-ft).

The Renault Kwid production version is allegedly slated for a 2016 release and will be around 20-30 percent more affordable than the larger Captur.
