The current Astra J has aged quite well but Opel needs to launch a replacement to better tackle the new arrivals in this very competitive segment such as the Peugeot 308. It is expected the new Opel will lose between 50 and 100 kg which can only be good news since the biggest enemy of the current generation is its hefty curb weight.

Expect to find an evolutionary design wrapped around in possibly a larger package since this prototype appears to be a bit larger than the current Astra. In addition, the mirrors are installed on the doors while at the back there's a more prominent tailgate and a longer roof spoiler. The overall design is likely to take influences from the striking Monza concept.

As you probably have heard by now, the next generation Opel Astra will be assembled outside Germany as the hatchback will be produced in Gliwice, Poland and Ellesmere Port, Cheshire, UK so production at the Rüsselsheim factory will end. The model will be sold in the same body styles as the current generation: hatchback, wagon (Sports Tourer), coupe (GTC) and sedan.

Opel could decide to introduce the all-new Astra at next year's Geneva Motor Show in March or in September at home in Germany during the Frankfurt Motor Show. Sales should commence before the end of 2015 or early 2016.
