The Ford Explorer and Expedition aren't exactly lightweight but they could see a massive weight reduction thanks to a switch to aluminum.

Citing company insiders, Edmunds is reporting the next-generation Explorer and Expedition could follow in the footsteps of the 2015 F-150 and adopt aluminum body panels. There's no word on specifics but the extensive use of aluminum allows the F-150 to weigh up to 700 lbs (317 kg) less than its predecessor.

While the company is still debating a switch to aluminum, Ford is also looking at other ways to improve fuel efficiency and reduce CO2 emissions. This means the models could feature more aerodynamic styling and more efficient engines and transmissions.

If everything pans out, the redesigned models could arrive in the next five to six years.
