A Porsche 911 prototype was filmed recently on the Nürburgring and it is believed the model was powered by the firm's new flat-four turbocharged engine.

A couple of weeks ago Porsche chief Matthias Müller announced the next generation Boxster and Cayman will be powered by a newly developed flat-four turbocharged boxer gasoline engine. He also said the motor will be capable of generating as much as 400 HP (294 kW) most likely in the hotter GTS version.

Now, a 911 facelift test mule was seen on the 'Ring providing a very different soundtrack than what we are used to hear. It is believed the car was equipped with the new engine although we don't understand why Porsche is testing it on the larger 911. It's hard to believe at this point the 911 will get a four-cylinder engine but with the downsizing trend in full swing, anything could happen.

Maybe this four-cylinder engine will be used in the next-gen 911 together with an electric motor since Porsche R&D chief Wolfgang Hatz has already confirmed the next 911 will get a hybrid version but not before 2018.
