The Toyota Tundra hasn't really caught on with buyers but a new report is indicating the next-generation model will offer a diesel engine.

According to Wards Auto, the 2016 Tundra could have an optional 5.0-liter V8 Cummins turbodiesel engine. There's no word on specifications but the next-generation Nissan Titan will also use a version of the same engine. In Nissan's application, the mill will produce more than 300 bhp (223 kW) and have approximately 550 lb-ft (744 Nm) of torque.

The publication goes on to say the Cummins diesel could eventually be replaced by a Toyota-developed engine that was under development in 2007 and 2008 but shelved during the global economic downturn.
