Following a preview in December, Polestar has released specifications for their 5.0-liter V8 engine that will be used in the Volvo S60 V8 Supercars race car.
Based on the 4.4-liter V8 that was used in the S80 and XC90, the 5.0-liter engine has a modified aluminum cylinder block, new aluminum heads, eight throttle bodies and a 10:1 compression ratio. Thanks to these modifications, the engine develops 650 HP (478 kW) and 660 Nm (487 lb-ft) of torque.
According to Polestar's head of engine development, Mattias Evensson, "Just as for our road car engines, our main objective is drivability or 'power when you need it' as our racing drivers say. The challenges are many to get an optimal combination of power, reliability, fuel efficiency and drivability." He went on to say "The Volvo engines are always very good to work with from the start and this one is certainly no exception."
The S60 race car will hit the track on February 15th, before competing in the Clipsal 500 on March 1st and 2nd.
