A new eight-speed automatic transmission will be offered in the 2015 Corvette Stingray, according to a technical paper published by SAE International.

Details are limited but a preview of the paper suggests the transmission will be named the 8L90 and replace the 6L80 six-speed automatic. The transmission will reportedly have "four simple planetary gearsets, two brake clutches and three rotating clutches." The transmission will also have an overall ratio spread of 7.0 which promises to improve performance and fuel efficiency. The gearbox will also have lower noise, vibration and harshness levels - especially in top gear.

As a refresher, the Corvette Stingray is powered by a 6.2-liter V8 engine that develops 455 bhp (339 kW) and 460 lb-ft (624 Nm) of torque.
