Mazda has officially unveiled the Axela / Mazda3 SKYACTIV-Hybrid at the Tokyo Motor Show.

Described as a "major milestone," the model has a 2.0-liter SKYACTIV-G four-cylinder petrol engine that develops 99 HP (73 kW) and 142 Nm (104 lb-ft) of torque. It is backed up by an electric motor that produces 82 HP (60 kW) and 207 Nm (152 lb-ft) of torque. This setup gives the car a combined maximum output of 136 HP (100 kW).

The electric motor assists the petrol engine, primary at low speeds, which helps the 1,390 kg (3,064 lb) hybrid to average 30.8 km/L (3.2 L/100km / 72.4 mpg US / 87.0 mpg UK) in the JC08 cycle.

The Axela SKYACTIV-Hybrid will go on sale in Japan shortly and pricing starts at ¥2,373,000 (including taxes).
